The Importance Of Aviation Headsets In Flight Training

Pilot headphones are valuable tools in general aviation (GA) cockpits. Besides blocking unwanted sound, earphones facilitate internal & external communication while reducing noise-related fatigue. Though great for all types of flying, earsets are particularly valuable in flight training operations.
For those new to aviation, a general aviation cockpit presents several challenges. Rookie aviators often have little or no experience flying in light aircraft. An effective way to improve their experiences and simplify their flight training is by using aviation headsets.
One of the primary benefits of pilot headphones is hearing protection. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cites 85 decibels as a "safe" daily exposure amount for a period of up to eight hours. Above this noise level, OSHA notes that even short periods of exposure to loud noise can result in permanent hearing loss. Some individuals are susceptible to detrimental hearing damage at noise levels below 85 decibels. General aviation aircraft, particularly high-performance models, can generate noise in excess of 100 dB (A) at high power settings. To protect aviation students from possible hearing damage, earphones should be used for all flight lessons.

Five Reasons To Have A Backup Headset For Pilots

For general aviation (GA) pilots, a headset can feel like an extension of the aviator himself. Many pilots have a preferred brand or model of headset they wouldn't consider flying without. If you fall into this category, you still might want to consider acquiring a new model for your flying activities.
Sure, your trusted model might have served you well. Perhaps you've had it for years and have never experienced the slightest problem. Even if your proven earphones will probably soldier on for decades, consider the following reasons to add a backup headset for pilots.
1. Take Advantage of New Technology: Like anything electronic, aviation headphones continue to evolve to reflect advances in technology. Modern headset models contain a variety of convenient features, including cell phone & audio connections, Bluetooth compatibility, and even wireless headsets. Depending on the type of flying you do, one or more of these features can make a new headset worth a look. Do you frequently use uncontrolled airports that require phone calls to flight service and/or ATC? Are your typical flight legs long and monotonous? Constantly getting tangled up in your headset's cords? If any of these situations apply to you, take a look at some of the market's current offerings.

Whether you're planning cross-country flying or not much flying at all, winter flying is all about assessing and managing risk. Here are some important tips and strategies to prep your plane. These do not supercede having your aircraft professionally serviced and maintained.
  • Know the weather. Obviously, weather is the crucial variable in winter flying. It's important to understand meteorology and keep track of upcoming weather patterns that could affect your flying. Start checking weather patterns three days prior to flight, but keep in mind patterns can change rapidly.
There are several useful weather tracking websites out there that offer forecasts, Doppler radar data, satellite imagery and useful aviation tools. Some of the best are the Aviation Digital Data Service at aviationweather.gov/adds/ and the FAA-sponsored Direct Access User Terminal Systems (DUATS) site at duats.com. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association offers free online weather information for members at aopa.org. Also check out the Weather Underground and The Weather Channel on cable for helpful insight into national weather trends.

Destinations for Cheap Flights in South Africa

The air travel market in South Africa is fast increasing with four domestic low cost airlines offering cheap flights in South Africa. These airlines offer limited destinations and routes throughout the country with only the national carrier South African Airways servicing all of the destinations.
The three major international airports, namely Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport, Cape Town International Airport and Durban International Airport are considered the gateway for international flights into South Africa as well as the most regular scheduled domestic flights within the country and are serviced by all of the budget airlines offering cheap flights, namely Kulula.com, Mango Airlines, 1Time Airlines and Velvet Sky Aviation. These three airports offer regular scheduled flights daily between the three destinations as well as operate as the base from which flights to smaller destinations are scheduled. Due to the popularity of the routes between these three airports, the four domestic low cost airlines offer a number of daily flights to and from them.
There are a number of smaller airports across the country to which some of the budget airlines fly to from the major centres, offering the traveller cheap flights across South Africa. Velvet Sky, the newcomer to the industry, is the only one not to offer flights to the smaller destinations and only offers flights between Johannesburg's OR Tambo International, Cape Town International and Durban's King Shaka International Airports.

Galapagos Bird Watching Tours

For many of those interested in birds, bird watching tours to the Galapagos represent a holy grail, a chance to travel in the footsteps of Darwin and see for themselves the incredible diversity of animal life on the islands that led to his development of the theory of evolution. Nowadays part of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are an invaluable treasure trove of biodiversity. South America offers visitors some truly spectacular bird watching opportunities, but the Galapagos offer something really out of the ordinary. Here is a brief rundown of some of the most eagerly anticipated birds you might get to see if you choose to go on bird watching tours to the Galapagos Islands:
Galapagos Hawk (Buteo galapagoensis): A vulnerable breed endemic to the Galapagos Islands, there is believed to be only around 150 breeding pairs. As with other birds of prey the species is subject to strong sexual dimorphism, meaning that the male is significantly smaller than the female. The adult is generally a brown/black colour, and an apex predator, the Galapagos Hawk feeds on insects, lizards, snakes and rodents. Due to the proximity of the Galapagos Islands to the equator, there is no defined mating season, and the bird will mate at intervals throughout the year.

Geography
There are three broad geographical zones to be discovered on your Madagascar tours. The highlands are on a plateau in the middle of the island that reaches up to 4,500 feet above sea level, and are the most densely populated region of Madagascar. The area is characterised by rice-growing valleys lying between the hills. Erosion has exposed the red soil here, which is from what Madagascar derives its nickname 'The Red Island'. The second main region is a narrow and steep escarpment that runs the length of the eastern coast, and contains most of the island's tropical rain forest area. The third area is a wide, dry plain which slopes between the boundaries of the western highlands towards the Mozambique Channel.

School Trip Ideas: The Three Peaks Challenge

Coming up with great ideas for geography school trips that will excite and interest students can be hard, but they may well be taken with the idea of doing the Three Peaks Challenge.
This undertaking involves making your way over the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales in 24 hours and, as well as taxing your students physically, this would also put them through their paces mentally as they get to know the local countryside and how it has evolved over the years.
There are several routes you and your group can choose to go down as you climb over Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike.
Snowdon, for example, has a number of tracks for you to select from, all of which vary in terms of difficulty. The majority of people take either the Pyg Track or the Miners Track, beginning at the Pen-y-Pass.
Pyg Track starts as a tarmac path and you will find it is quite rocky as you go. Keep an eye out for the large upright stone that can be found 30 minutes from the top of the route, where it joins with the Miners Track.
The Miners Track, meanwhile, is quite a smooth walk and will take you past the three lakes of Glaslyn, Llyn Llydaw and Llyn Teyrn.

Top Energy Snacks for a Long Distance Driver

Hauling is not an easy job, but somebody's got to do it! Jobs involving return loads can take many hours, if not days. And even with the driving hour limits that are imposed on UK and European haulers, it may be hard to keep your energy and attention at its highest. When the miles seem to tick slowly by and you feel yourself flagging, you may want to reach for a cigarette or another cup of tea or coffee, but why not try eating a small, healthy snack to keep you feeling alert instead? One of the dangers of being in the haulage industry is the tendency to eat things that slow down your system and make you feel groggy and less than healthy. But next time you are scheduled for some lengthy return loads, consider packing a few of these alternatives to perk you up.
Granola bars- We all know them. The sweet, nutty, and sometimes chocolaty snack bars that pack a healthy punch of slow-burning energy; but we're not talking about the sugar loaded Rice Krispie treats, which can give you an instant sugar high, only to be followed by a low. When working on return loads, you need an instant blast of energy from sugar, hopefully fruit based, to wake you up, followed by the sustained level that keeps your attention at its highest. Why not try a granola bar such as Nature Valley, or Jordan's, whose balanced bars provide just the right amount of crunch and sweetness?
